The Nature of Mind (NOM) Research Project

A transdisciplinary study of non-dual meditation and consciousness

The Nature of Mind (NOM) Research Project is an international scientific initiative investigating the nature of consciousness through long-term contemplative practice. Combining neuroscience, phenomenology, computational modeling, molecular biology, and Buddhist contemplative expertise, NOM aims to understand how non-dual meditation impacts human flourishing  by transforming perception, self-experience, emotional regulation during wakefulness and sleep.

The project brings together researchers from INSERM / Lyon University (France), EPFL Lausanne (Switzerland), the University of Wisconsin–Madison (USA), the University of Virginia (USA), Oxford University (UK) and Coimbra University (Portugal) and an international network of contemplative scholars and practitioners.

Why does NOM matter?

First longitudinal neuroscience study of a traditional 3-year retreat

Implications for mental health, consciousness research, and artificial intelligence

Integration of EEG, fMRI, phenomenology, biomarkers, and machine learning

Focus on non-dual awareness (Dzogchen / Mahamudra)
